With more than 60 million internet users, Nigeria unarguably has the largest share of the internet market in Africa.
In
the past few years, we have seen online startups in the country do so
well and generating unbelievable revenues. The likes of Konga, Jumia,
IrokoTv and Jobberman have shown anyone can succeed as an entrepreneur
in the country if only they take advantage of the "virtual space".
There
is still enough room for thousands of businesses to do well in the
country. The opportunities are never and would never be limited in
Nigeria. Unlike before, Nigerians now do businesses online without fear
or doubts.
2014, will no doubt be a better year for online
entreprenuers and intending ones if they do it right. I have collated 5
online businesses that should do very well this year. Please do
understand that there are a lot of them but I only picked the ones I can
think of now.
1. Bulk SMS Service and SMS Marketing
If
there is any better time to make money from running a bulk sms platform,
it is now. The elections would be in 2015 and a lot of politicians
running for several post would be needing bulk sms service or sms
marketing.
Religious institutions, educational organisations and
certain groups or association are also prospective clients for this
business.
The cost of starting a bulk sms platform is relatively
cheap. Wiith at most N20,000, you can register as a reseller with some
top bulk sms websites in Nigeria.
2. E-commerce Websites
If
you are into any form of product-making or product sales and you are
not online then you are already missing a lot. Whether you are into
fashion designing or fashion sales, gadget sales, shoe-making and
furnitures amongst others, you should try to setup your own online shop.
The
volume of product-based searches in Nigeria is increasing by the day.
As I write, Nigerians are doing a lot of search for electronic products,
clothing brands and just any thing. Having an online shop, helps you to
increase sales and gain a lot of recognition.
E-commerce
websites doing very well in Nigeria are Konga.com , Jumia.com ,
Dealdey.com, Gloo.ng, Brandnubians.com, Heels.com.ng and Scuupng.com
3. Online Directories
Help Nigerians find what they want easily by setting up an online directory.
Although
online directories do aid searches, they are in no way a search engine
but only help to deliver results based on categories and location. It
can be in a specific niche or a general field.
Examples of online
directories includes, online business listing, hotel directories,
medical institution directories and more. In Nigeria, we have some
directories such as Vconnect.com , Hotels.ng doing brilliantly.
The
cost of starting an online directory is cheap but you would need to do a
lot of work in building a list of businesses or firms
4. Online Magazines and Blogging
Another profitable online business is blogging or owning an online magazine.
One
of the reasons, Nigerians don't really earn from Blogging is the way
they go about it. Before going into blogging, you niche to discover what
niche you would focus on. There are a lot of niches that would do so
well in Nigeria which includes Fashion, Health, Parental Care,
Relationships, Celebrity Gist, Music, Politics and Careers.
Avoid
copying other bloggers because it would never make you earn like they
do. Its even better when you can streamline your blogpost to a niche, you
become an authority in what you do that way.
5. Social Media Consultancy
Social media consultancy is another business I strongly advise those with communicative and social skills to start.
Businesses
in Nigeria are now realising they can improve sales and brand awareness
if they leverage on the impact of the social media. The number of job
openings for social media marketers have been on the rise which goes to
show you can depend on this for income.
As a social media expert, you can manage social media accounts for big brands or small businesses.
Like
I mentioned , there are still a lot of business ideas that would excel
in Nigeria. I have only picked from the ones that did well or showed
promise in 2013.
